On March 8, 1909, female workers in Chicago, Illinois, held strikes and demonstrations in order to fight against bourgeois oppression, exploitation, and discrimination and fight for freedom and equality. This is an organized mass struggle of working women in history. It fully shows the strength of working women. The struggle won wide sympathy and enthusiastic response from the women in the country and the rest of the world.
In August 1910, the Socialist Women's Congress was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. The meeting was attended by representatives from 17 regions. The main issue discussed at the meeting was to oppose imperialist expansion of military preparations and defend world peace; The protection of the rights of women and children was also discussed. On the basis of the proposal of the German socialist revolutionary Caitejin, who presided over the meeting, in order to strengthen the solidarity of working women in the world and support women's struggle for freedom and equality, the General Assembly stipulated that March 8 of each year is Women's Day.

In December 1949, the State Council of our Government stipulated that March 8 of each year was Women's Day. In 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution requesting each region to choose one day of the year as the United Nations Day for Women's Rights and World Peace, in accordance with its own history and national traditions and customs. For the United Nations, Women's Day is scheduled for 8 March.
