The team's new probe fabrication technique uses side-free microoptical devices (less than 130 M in diameter) to 3D print directly on a single-mode beam. The finished micro-imaging device is only 0.48 mm in size and can enter the blood vessel directly. The 3d imaging provided by the Optical coherence tomography allows doctors to better understand the causes of heart disease and to intervene before a heart attack. 

     Dr Symon, a member of the team, said 3D printing could create complex lenses that are invisible to the naked eye, meeting the medical need for small, high resolution cameras.
